Time for a repeat of the note from our Treasurer:

Remember to send in your dues.
  1. Dues are only $30 / year,
  2. Dues are due Jan. 1 each year,
  3. The difference in replacement mast cost is $600 more to non-members, (i.e., 20 years of dues!),
  4. And two of last three new mast buyers were not members in the previous year.

Bottom Line: send dues to Latour before you crash your mast!

Announcing The 2012 Sarasota One Design Midwinters Event

Confirm your plans now to sail in Sarasota, Florida on March 16, 17, 18th for the 21st Annual Sarasota One Design Midwinters Regatta. The S2 7.9 class has the opportunity to race either two or three days as part of this event. Please confirm your interest in attending and also your desire to sail on Friday, via email as soon as possible. Based on canvasing of the fleet sailing at the wonderfully hosted and well attended 2011 Nashville Equalizer, we should have no problem getting 12+ boats on the line for this event, with the goal being 16+. The event will be hosted at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, the S2 7.9 Class will be hosted by Travis Yates (#50 Indigo). Plans are in the works for a S2 7.9 Class grill out at the Squadron Friday night. There is camping space onsite and room for RVs in addition to full facilities available at the Squadron. Sarasota has the nation's top rated beaches, great local attractions and a fantastic array of housing options for those that want to make the regatta into the corner stone of a family vacation. Travis Yates will arrange for boat storage before and after the event for those wishing to sail more than one southern event this winter. One such event to consider is the Leukemia Cup in Charlotte Harbor the 24th and 25th of March. The six-boat strong Charlotte Harbor S2 7.9 fleet has offered to get an S2 7.9 class start for those who wish to race back to back weekends in Southwest Forida. Please drop Travis a quick email to let him know you are planning on sailing in Sarasota and to let him know if you would like to sail on Friday. travis@seamester.com or call at 941-350-0908 More details including the NOR, local travel info and registration information will be posted as soon as it is available.

Sailing World again features the 7.9

I was finally getting to read the June 2011 issue of Sailing World, when I cam across the "one thursday night in America" article. The title and the blurb about how they asked readers to write in is set on a great photo of Maniac (#311). The #1 is cracked off a bot and the sun is setting at the bowpulpit as a crew clutches what looks like a super sized Heinekien and holds the boom box on the cabin top. Roger Keubel - Maniac's owner - sent in the article. Thanks Roger!

Here's a note from our Treasurer:

Remember to send in your dues.
  1. Dues are only $30 / year,

The S2 7.9 Mid Winter Championship was held at athe St. Pete NOOD Regatta in St. petersburg, Florida. 10 boats competed and it went down to the last race. Please put this on your racing calendar, August 5 -7, will be the annual S2 Canadians at the Sarnia Yacht Club in Sarnia, Ontario. Last year we had 7 boats on the starting line, let's double that this year. Come sail this regatta and leave your boats in Sarnia for the CCR. Stay tuned for NOR info.

We currently have four boats registered (3 Sarnia boats, and the good Dr. Paul), let's get more registrations in. We are also going to make this the S2 Mid-Winter Championship. We could easily have 11 boats on the starting line with the rumored boats (SMAC, Majic. Rock On, Money Shot, and some more of the local Floridians) that are going to register. Hope to see you in St. Pete.

NOR posted for 2011 Charlotte Harbor Regatta

With two exciting new classes invited to participate and a worldwide wave of interest in Charlotte Harbor, the board of directors today released the Notice of Race for the Charlotte Harbor Regatta and the opening of our registration site for the Feb. 3-6, 2011 event.

Low fees, free slips, great hotel rates, generous sponsors and helpful volunteers make the Charlotte Harbor Regatta “the fun, affordable regatta.” The 2010 regatta drew 65 boats in eight classes, including the S2 7.9, the fast-growing Viper 640 fleet and the popular Flying Scot fleet. The multihull circle that featured the Hobie 16 and Hobie Wave classes this year, will double next year with the addition of the F18 and Weta trimaran classes. Also invited to participate are the Sunfish, Laser and Precision 15 classes. Other classes will be considered upon request.

The Charlotte Harbor Regatta will feature fast, competitive racing, exciting onshore activities and beautiful Southwest Florida weather. Classes will race on three circles, grouped according to boat compatibility and size. Buzz about the 2010 Charlotte Harbor Regatta and the great sailing conditions here resulted in the International Association for Disabled Sailing awarding its 2012 World Disabled Sailing Championships to Charlotte Harbor, which was recognized by SAIL magazine as “one of the top 10 greatest places to sail in the United States.”

An early registration discount and a $5 US Sailing member discount make the regatta even more affordable. Regatta rates on area hotels start at $65, and early birds can snag a two-bedroom suite right at our regatta host, Fishermen’s Village Resort & Marina, for only $140 a night, 30% off their regular rate. In addition, all nightly regatta dinners are included in the registration fee, with additional crew or family tickets only $40.

Virtually everything you need to know about the Charlotte Harbor Regatta is available on our website at www.charlotteharborregatta.com. Participants may register and pay online via our RegattaTech application or print out a registration form and mail in your entry and payment. The website also will enable participants and prospective entrants to see who has signed up for what classes, buy regatta gear and follow the results come February. Lodging, directions, related links and a regatta store also are featured online.

For participant, media and sponsor inquiries about the 2011 Charlotte Harbor Regatta, e-mail Brian Gleason at gleason@charlotteharborregatta.com.

Thanks for your interest in the Charlotte Harbor Regatta. We look forward to seeing you on beautiful Charlotte Harbor in February.

The crew of Raised By Wolves would like to extend our warmest appreciation for the sailing and hospitality we enjoyed this past weekend at PPYC in Nashville. Announcing Event in Alexandria Virginia

June 12/13 is the Geico Cup Regatta run by the Daingerfield Island Sailing Club (DISCSailing.org) racing in the Potomac River. DISC has four actively raced 7.9s out of the Washington Sailing Marina (WSM) and a fleet of MORC boats with ratings from 168 to 180. We invite the 7.9s to join us for a weekend of tight racing. WSM is providing free docking for visiting racers and Geico is sponsoring the event with trophies and swag. DC is a great place to visit in June. Spring racing has been excellent with lots of wind and plenty of boats on the line. We have plenty of experience with S2s and find they adapt very well to our home waters. Sail in sight of the monuments and Washington history on the Potomac. For more information email us at comments@discsailing.org. The poster of this race is available here.

Horizon True Receives High Marks
in Practical Sailor review

We are quite proud of our Class Board Member, Director of Rules and Specifications, Jeff Mootz for receiving high marks in the Practical Sailor review of his Horizon True camera mount system

Horizon True camera mounts came about as a desire to film on a sailboat primarily for racing and post race analysis. Keeping the horizon level is needed not only for the viewer watching the video but to give a true sense of what is happening on the boat. Horizon True camera mounts have evolved over the last 12 years along with technology, i.e., smaller cameras. These mounts are also hydraulic dampened so there is much less rebound-swinging of the camera, coming off a wave for example. Horizon True mounts are used professionally in filming with Gary Jobson for ESPN. The mounts are designed for a variety of cameras. Horizon True has a line of cameras available as well. See www.horizontrue.com for more details.
All mounts and cameras have been tested on a S2 7.9 "Skyhawk" on Lake Minnetonka MN.

Bonus Package for Chicago NOOD
PLUS
S2 7.9 NOOD Regatta Stimulus Package

From the Vice Pres.:

** The S2 7.9 Class Stimulus Plan will be in effect. **
The S2 Fleet ONLY. One boat will win the free entry fee.

** Hard Tack will provide an additional prize. **
For what / For whom? Your suggestions welcome.
We could award it to the regatta winner. Or to a different wiener. Let me know what you think. This could be fun.

** Who's in ?? **
In addition, where do you want to sail out of? North? Put in at Diversey. Sail out of Belmont. Or South? Put in at Burnham. Sail out of CYC?

I'll go first. Hard Tack is in. Prefer sailing North. Diversey / Belmont. It's easier and more fun. The CYC North Station at Belmont is great.

S2 7.9 NOOD Regatta Stimulus Package

I had this idea e-mailed to me, and the class has decided to give it a try.

In going with the trend of Economic Stimulus, the S2 7.9 Class has decided to try one too. Here's how it is going to work: For all NOOD regatta registered entries in the 7.9 class for the Annapolis, Detroit, and Chicago events, we will have a drawing at each regatta and pick one boat to have their entry fee for the regatta paid for by the class (the winner will get reimbursed for the entry fee that they paid for the event). We hope that this incentive will attract more participants to these events. These drawnings will be completely random (put all the boat names for the regatta in a hat, and pull out the winner). Hopefully we can build some camaraderie in the fleet and have some fun with this too.

There are about 6 weeks left till the Annapolis NOOD, and we have 5 boats registered at this time. Let's try to get over 10 boats on the starting line. Annapolis is a great venue, and who knows, maybe you will be the lucky winner of a fully paid entry fee.

Reminder:
Annapolis NOOD April 30 - May 2, 2010
Detroit NOOD June 4-6, 2010
Chicago NOOD June 11-13, 2010

See you on the Starting Line,

John Spierling
Rebel 108

Next up -- Annapolis NOODs!

We have 5 boats registered for the Annapolis Noods, with only 3 states represented. Are there any boats in Maryland? This could be the Eastern Championships! Here is the list of racers. The race web site is here.

Tom Cassidy started an initiative to get the Lake Erie 7.9's together. See his message here.

We have updated the Member List button above to show the current memberships.

Fleets fill Charlotte Harbor as regatta wraps up

After two days of heavy winds and high waves, Mother Nature delivered Chamber of Commerce weather for the final day of the inaugural Charlotte Harbor Regatta, Sunday, Feb. 7 on Charlotte Harbor, Florida.

More than 60 boats in eight classes, including two of the three Viper 640 vessels that broke masts on Saturday, started the day in picture-perfect sailing conditions. Shifting winds, not damaging gusts challenged skippers Sunday.

In the Viper 640 class, Brad Boston continued his winning ways to capture the overall victory ahead of Dan Gorman. Bill Abbott took advantage of his competitors’ misfortunes on Saturday to slip into third overall and held on Sunday to stay there.

Fred and Reid Hutchinson went 1-2 in the Sunfish class, while Rita Steele took third. The trio traded spaces in the Top 3 all weekend, but Fred Hutchinson’s consistency – a first, two seconds and two thirds — prevailed.

With two wins in the Hobie 16 class Sunday, Mike Montague vaulted past Day Two leader Kenneth Hilk, who dropped to third behind Randy Payne.

Rick White started strong Saturday with a win and finished the regatta the same way to take the overall title in the Hobie Wave class. Dave White and Stan Woodruff finished second and third, respectively, separated by a point after six races.

In the S2 7.9 race, Paul Robbins made a strong run at Alan Konegsberg with two wins Sunday, but fell two points short in the overall standings after nine often grueling races over the three days. Peter New took third.

Donna Steele bounced back from a second place finish on Saturday to win all three races Sunday to top Alden Spencer in the Laser class.

Harry Carpenter capped off four seconds with a win in the day’s last race to capture the title in the Flying Scot fleet, followed by John Selldorff and Jeff Penfield, who took third over Ira Perry with a tiebreaker win in the third race.
